The relationship between employers and employees plays a critical role in the success of any organisation. An employment relationship refers to the dynamic between an employer and employee, including expectations, obligations and responsibilities. Both parties might have different needs and expectations, and finding a balance that meets both their needs is essential. Positive work environments, employee engagement and productivity are enhanced by harmonious employment relationships. On the other hand, an imbalanced employment relationship can lead to low morale, high turnover rates and decreased productivity. Therefore, employers must prioritise balancing the employment relationship to ensure a successful organisation.

Communication is Key: Establishing Open and Honest Communication Channels

For a harmonious working relationship to be maintained, effective communication is essential. It is proved that open and honest communication builds trust and strengthens relationship in both personal and professional settings.  As a result, establishing open and honest communication channels, employees are more inclined to express their ideas, feedback and challenges freely to their colleagues and reporting manager. By communicating openly and transparently, people create an environment where others can share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or repercussions due to their actions. It is important to create a culture of open communication by engaging employees on a regular basis. Communication about an organisation's mission, vision and policies should not only occur during new employee orientation but continue throughout the entire employment relationship. Building a foundation of trust and respect through open communication channels can lead to improved relationships and better outcomes.

Maintaining Fairness and Respect in the Workplace

It is also crucial to maintain a fair and respectful work environment in the workplace as part of a balanced employment relationship. One way to create a positive and productive environment is by designing and implementing a good employee relations policy that provides fair and consistent treatment to all employees. Educating employees about diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) to promote equitable treatment is one way to achieve that goal. There are many steps that employers can take to recognise and appreciate their hard-working employees, invest in their career development and trust to empower their teams. The best way to foster a sense of community in the workplace is by encouraging transparency by being open and honest with your employees about your company’s goals, plans and challenges. Being transparent will help you build trust and foster a sense of community. Employees are valuable assets to an organisation, and employers who view them as valuable assets can maintain a positive working relationship with them.

Consistent enforcement of policies and consequences for violations are also essential for maintaining fairness and respect in the workplace. Employers should review disciplinary policies and procedures to ensure that they are fair and protect employees from impulsive or ill-considered reactions by managers. Additionally, employers should collect data on their employment practices and disclose certain information to enforcement agencies, workers and the public to ensure transparency and accountability. Employers can demonstrate their commitment to creating a fair and respectful workplace culture by consistently enforcing policies and consequences for violations.

Encouraging Collaboration and Teamwork for a Productive Work Environment

Encouraging collaboration and teamwork is another essential strategy for balancing the employment relationship. Working towards undefined or different goals can create confusion and hinder productivity. Employers should encourage collaboration and teamwork to create a productive work environment. Providing opportunities for employees to give feedback can encourage autonomy, creativity, innovation and growth. Promoting employee engagement can help reduce workplace conflicts, improve employee loyalty and retention and increase productivity and revenue. By implementing these strategies, employers can create a balanced employment relationship that benefits both the organisation and its employees.
